Normandy in Three Days: The Beaches, Caen and Mont-Saint-Michel by Tour
Three days is the length most people give Normandy, and it is enough for the two things they come for: the D-Day beaches and Mont-Saint-Michel. This plan uses one base, Bayeux, and books a tour for each full day, so you never drive. The Normandy and Mont St Michel tours it relies on all leave from the same town. It sets out each day, a swap for Caen, the cost and the closed days to plan round.
The short answer: day one, the train to Bayeux and an afternoon in town or on a half-day tour. Day two, the whole American sector. Day three, the Mont. Sleep three nights in Bayeux. Tours alone come to about $340 a person.
What fits into three days in Normandy?
One full day on the beaches of the American sector, one full day at the Mont, and a half day of arrival. That covers Utah Beach, Pointe du Hoc, Omaha Beach and the Normandy American Cemetery, then the abbey and the village on the rock. Bayeux works as the base because the tours start there. The beaches are about 45 minutes away, the Mont days leave the same square, and the American Battle Monuments Commission itself points visitors to hotels in the town.
How do you get to Bayeux on day one?
By train from Paris Saint-Lazare. The Bayeux tourist office puts the town two and a half hours from Paris, and the cemetery's own advice says the rail trip takes three. Take a morning train and you arrive with the afternoon ahead of you.
Spend it in town, or on the coast. Bayeux Cathedral, consecrated in 1077, is free and open until 6 pm. The Tapestry museum is closed for renovation until autumn 2027, but the Linen and Wool exhibition on the Tapestry's conservation has been open since May 2026. If you would rather see the sea on your first day, the afternoon half day collects you from selected Bayeux hotels for $107 and brings you back around 6 pm.
Which full day covers the American sector on day two?
The US battlefields day is built for it. It collects you at Bayeux station or Place du Québec and spends about five and a half hours at the sites: two hours in Sainte-Mère-Église with a stop at the Airborne Museum, then Utah Beach, the German cemetery at La Cambe, the Rangers' cliff, Omaha Beach and the cemetery. It costs $154, with eight seats.
Other full days cover similar ground. The nine-hour day from Place du Québec at $162 stops at the Utah Beach Museum and takes children from 5. The day in the Mercedes people carrier at $216 gives you about six and a half hours at the sites, but lists entrance fees as extra. If you took the afternoon half day on day one, any of them still adds Utah Beach and the paratroopers' village.
How long do you get at the Mont on day three?
From Bayeux, three to five hours. The full day with a national guide leaves Place du Québec at 8 am, costs $185 with the abbey ticket, and gives you about five hours on the Mont, with two hours in the abbey. The shared day that collects you from your hotel costs $178 and gives you about three hours, back by 4 pm.
The abbey opens from 9:30 am to 6 pm between September and April, and to 7 pm from May to August. It closes on 1 January, 1 May and 25 December, and on Sunday 4 October 2026. The Normandy and Mont St Michel tours page compares every Mont day side by side.
Where do Caen and the museum fit?
Swap them in for day two if you want the full story told indoors first. The Mémorial de Caen afternoon costs $170 and includes a ticket to the museum, which on its own costs €20.80 for an adult and is free for children under 10. The tour meets at the ticket desk at 12:45 pm for five hours at the Rangers' cliff, Omaha Beach and the cemetery, and you visit the museum before or after.
You lose Utah Beach and Sainte-Mère-Église, and gain the museum's galleries on the war, the landings and the Battle of Normandy. For a family with older children, that trade often makes sense.
What if you only have two days?
Drop day one. Arrive in Bayeux the evening before, take the American sector on the first day and the Mont on the second. If you have one day only, choose between them: the beaches from Bayeux, or the Mont from Bayeux, but not both. The one tour that fits both into a day is a private day from Paris, fourteen and a half hours long, at $667 a person.
Where should you sleep?
Three nights in Bayeux. Apart from the Caen swap, the days in this plan leave from the town, and on the hotel-pickup days you are collected from your door. Port-en-Bessin, the fishing port between two cliffs on the coast, is the other base the cemetery suggests, but the tours do not start there.

Which closed days should you plan round?
- The abbey: closed 1 January, 1 May, 25 December and Sunday 4 October 2026.
- The cemetery: open every day from 9 am to 5 pm except 25 December and 1 January.
- The museums: the Overlord Museum shuts from 4 January to 12 February, and the Juno Beach Centre and the Arromanches museum shut in January.
- The Rangers' cliff: open daily during the 2026-27 works, by the west path only.
- Bayeux: the Tapestry museum stays closed until autumn 2027.
Which order works best?
Arrive, then beaches, then the Mont. The beach day is the one most worth doing rested, and the Mont day ends earliest. If rain is forecast, move things so that the Mont takes the wetter day: much of the visit is inside the abbey, and the beaches are exposed.
Book the days that refund only up to six days ahead last, once your dates are fixed. The US battlefields day and the hotel-pickup days work that way; the Mont day from Place du Québec refunds up to 24 hours ahead.
How much walking does the plan involve?
More than people expect. At the Rangers' cliff you cross uneven ground full of bomb craters, and the works have narrowed it to one path. At the cemetery the lawns and the memorial are spread out, and on the beaches you walk on sand. At the Mont, the climb to the abbey is hundreds of steps. Bring shoes with grip for all three days, and a layer for the wind on the coast.
Does the plan change in winter?
A little. At Caen the wettest months are October to December, with rain on 12 to 14 days a month, against 8 days in July. The abbey closes at 6 pm from September to April, and its ticket costs €13 from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027, against €16 in the summer season. Pack a waterproof, and check the weather month by month for your dates.
